Compassion, in simple terms, means the act of devoting selflessly towards the better being of other people in the world. It means to try and lend out our hands for the ones who are suffering, to bear with them, to share the suffering together. What compassion does to a human soul is what medicines do to a deep wound. Being compassionate is a very fulfilling job.We don't just make the lives of people around us much better, but it also changes us deep to the core. Many people think that compassion comes at great personal suffering and loss, which isn't quite true. Compassion is the act of giving, it is one of the noblest acts that we as humans can perform. When we practice compassion, we don't just change people's lives, but we also get to know the struggles that they are going through, silently, all by themselves. We get to know how lucky we are to have what they don't , to have not gone through what they have, we learn to be grateful for everything we have.
Compassion is practiced in all ways. Helping that clueless lady in the grocery store, helping that cargo guy unload his stuff and the list goes on. Even the smallest gestures of compassion are enough to strike a change in someone. That security man in our buildings, who works day and night without being noticed or asked about, a smile and a thankful gesture is all that will take to make his day. These are just the very few drops from the ocean full of ways one can practice compassion. We all have been through tough times, times when all we wished there was someone who could just listen to us or maybe just even tell us that everything is going to be alright. We don't know how many times we have just walked past people in our daily lives without having any idea of what they were going through, the fight that they were putting up.The recent demise of the Bollywood star Sushant Singh is a sad example of how often we miss the people who are silently suffering. It costs absolutely nothing, to just put up a cheerful smile every day for the people around us. It costs absolutely nothing to make someone's life happier.
Despite being very compassionate towards others we might sometimes forget to show some compassion towards ourselves. Self-compassion becomes very essential in defining our lives and future. We must forgive ourselves from time to time for all the mistakes we made. We must learn to be gentle with ourselves when faced with failures. We can't always rely on people for compassion, sometimes we need to stand up for ourselves because sometimes we are the only ones we have for ourselves. We must learn to love ourselves, learn to talk to the inner child within us. Talking to that inner child within we find how innocent it is and that it needs much of our attention. All these practices just make us accept ourselves more, embrace ourselves, and sympathize despite the inner critic lamenting.
All this calls for the need for us to cultivate compassion. During these tough times when the pandemic seems to have swept away our normal lives, there is much need for people to be compassionate towards each other, to understand the suffering of others even when we might not find ourselves to be suffering. Maybe, more compassionate people are all this world needs to make it a better place.
