India’s men’s hockey team- Tokyo Olympics 2020
The Indian men’s hockey team battled for the bronze medal against Germany, we came here after years of hard work and dedication. To see this, let us look at the enthusiasm shown by our teams. After Australia’s major defeat, the men’s first goal was to reach the quarterfinals. The group showed off the character’s splendid strengths. Heads were able to drop after such a great loss. However, they came back and won four games in a row – Spain, Argentina, Japan and Great Britain in residential areas. This determination came on the back of steady improvement after the tough period of 2008-12. You cannot pinpoint one particular reason for the revival, it has been the result of cumulatively improving on various fronts.
“That day when our flag was hoisted in front of thousands of Britons at the Wembley Stadium, I realized what independence means. When the national anthem was played and the flag was going up, I felt that I was flying.”
- Balbir Singh Dosanjh
Following the turmoil that painful partition had brought upon the subcontinent, India somehow managed to put together a crew for the 1948 London Olympics. After winning three hockey Olympic golds in the pre-Independence era (1928-36), Indian hockey team made the whole country proud once again as they went on to claim the coveted Gold medal at 1948 London Olympics. In the finals, India defeated their former colonizers by 4-0 to bring back smiles onto the faces of families struggling to rebuild their lives following the partition. It proved that an Independent India knew how to defend its territory. The 1948 London Olympics victory started a new period of dominance for the Indian hockey team.
India must take advantage of the new popularity of hockey and promote the game at all levels – grassroots to the national level. Now that the burden of waiting for 41 years has passed, hopefully winning will become a habit again.
