There she sat with a textbook on her lap, hair twirled around her finger, while she drifted away into another dimension, a dimension of her liking, where she dreamt of meeting her celebrity crush or asking out the homeboy she had been swooning over since third grade or even rescuing the people of North Korea. This fantasy world was far more exciting, vivid and in accordance to her liking than the real world.
We all have been in her shoes, right?; a little more during our adolescent years, when we dealt with emotional and physical transitions by establishing boundaries and participating in mind wandering. When sitting idly in nothingness with our imaginary companions seemed more fun than interacting with humans.
Daydreaming has mostly been considered malpractice. I remember my Biology teacher constantly warning us to not put our hands below our chin while we sat saying it was the gateway to being mentally absent, nonetheless we dozed off.
The practice of daydreaming has been in use since early centuries, even Einstein claimed to have begun his theory of relativity while daydreaming regularly about running alongside a sunbeam to the edge of the universe, even though it had no direct connection to math and science, it worked for him because he allowed himself time to explore it.
This escapism helps an individual to develop creatively and envision a promising future.
In today’s world daydreaming is constantly being drowned out by technology. Continuous Screen time is depriving an individual to carry out self-reflection and zone out as a result of which most teens now consider their life overwhelming and rant out about it on virtual media. We should thereby switch our social media thirst with imaginative wanderlust.
As T.E Lawrence once said:
“All men dream, but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity:
but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible”
Here’s to manifesting great daydreams which will lead to a greater future!
