The mind in its own place , and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of hell, a Hell of Heav'n.
The ability to "just think" -- to turn away from the external world and engage in thought and reflection -- is a mark of what it is to be human. Given that seeking pleasure and avoiding pain is one of the strongest of all human motives , it seems reasonable that people would employ conscious thinking with that aim, to improve their mood or reduce stress. After all ,when people have little to do, they have an ever present resource to keep them from getting bored: their own minds. People are free to retrieve pleasant memories , savor future events , construct elaborate fantasies , or enjoy their thoughts in other ways . Its been a saying , "The brain is wider than the sky ". It has been advised that when people are "distracted by outward cares" ,they should find " a space of quiet , wherein you can add to your knowledge of the good and learn to curb your restlessness" .
Researches indicate that we spend approximately 30% to 50% of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we are doing (that is 'mind wandering'). Episodes of daydreaming are frequently unintentional ,and individuals are often not meta cognitively aware that their mind is wandering. The physical characteristics of day dreaming most frequently mentioned were psychic deafness and blindness and muscular relaxation including that of the eyes. We ourselves could give the descriptions of individual instances of this psychic deafness , happened several times that we fail to hear some signals or whatever talking going on in our surrounding with our people or we are entirely unconscious if sometimes our mother calls us at home for some work until we hear a loud voice of "your name being called" in anger. These reflects that our minds were far away that moment ,that the person had to speak several times or too loud to attract our attention ,frequently happening in these pandemic days. I myself can describe an occasion on which my teacher threw a piece of chalk at a girl in my school " to wake her up" from daydreaming. I am sure many of us can relate to it. The conditions favouring day dreaming are majorly solitude ,soft music, sound of the waves or falling water or any monotonous sound which tends to fatigue the attention, listening to an uninteresting lecture , recitation ,physical or mental fatigue or looking at a distant landscape. It is noted several of these conditions are those favourable for inducing hypnosis.
Now, when most possibly might think of daydreaming as ruining time, it may even be looked upon and understood in a superior way. Daydreaming could take you to the land of your utopian vision and demonstrate the paths you would like pursuing, it stirs your imagination and makes you swallow things, your intellect would'nt agree upon. And anyways, how on earth would anybody think of creating something subordinate to sun, and tame evolution and accept being derogatory from what they only created. As truly quoted by Plato:
" Wonder is a feeling of philosopher,
And philosophy begins in wonder".
P.s- I believe, "The one who wonder are the wanderers".
